Overview
NEWLY RENOVATED! Welcome to HISTORIC LANDMARKS FOR
LIVING. The Metropolitan's ideal location places
you in one of the most desirable areas of center
city Philadelphia. Major corporations, medical
centers, and government offices are nearby, as
are the city's best hotels, restaurants, shops,
department stores, and the Avenue of the Arts
entertainment district. A short walk away is the
new Pennsylvania Convention Center complex and
the famed food bazaar, Reading Terminal Market,
and the many museums and cultural attractions
lining Philadelphia's Parisian-style boulevard,
the Ben Franklin Parkway, is just outside your
door. As an added convenience, rail and surface
public transportation, and major access roads
are close by, and parking is plentiful. The 26-story,
twin-tower Metropolitan, originally built in 1926,
is one of the city's finest examples of Art Deco
architecture. With its ornate marble carved lobby,
tiled roof deck with detailed plaster friezes
and terra cotta cornices, and curved hallways,
The Metropolitan is a return to the elegance of
another era. Historic Landmarks has taken great
care to preserve the unusual design elements in
creating a community of 120 stylish apartments.
It's no wonder this landmark is on the National
Register of Historic Places. Imaginative floorplans
continue the tradition of Art Deco styling, with
private entry foyers, soaring ceilings, and curved
interior walls. Each studio, one, and two bedroom
apartment, and three bedroom bi-level penthouse,
offers such luxuries as European-style gourmet
kitchens, plush wall-to-wall carpeting, individually
controlled heating and air-conditioning, and washers
and dryers. The Metropolitan features a landscaped
roof deck for warm weather entertaining, a fitness
center, and a comfy Community Room with a large-screen
TV, copier, and fax service. Professional 24-hour
management and 24-hour front desk are provided
for your comfort and peace of mind.

Additional Comments
Imagine living in Philadelphia in
1926. It was an era of glamour and grand style
and good times.
The city was on the brink of expansion as businesses
grew and retailers prospered. The curtains went
up on many new majestic theaters and movie palaces.
Ritzy new hotels rose to dramatic heights dotting
Philadelphia's skyline. During this time a spectacular
new 26-story twin tower was built at 15th &
Arch Street, defining the revolutionary architectural
style of the Art Deco age.
Today, as it was in the late 1920's,
this exquisite building stands tall as a noted
landmark of unquestionable distinction, one of
the reasons why it is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. It has served a variety of
purposes in its history, primarily as a residential
hotel, a USO hostel during World War II, and as
a dormitory for the neighboring YMCA.
In 1982, Historic Landmarks for
Living spent over $8 million to transform this
relic into The Metropolitan, a lavishly restored
art deco highrise of 120 residences. Step inside
The Metropolitan's towering entryway and enter
a lobby that recalls the elegance of another era.
Intricate hand-carved archways... detailed plaster
friezes...terra cotta cornices...delicate marble
carvings... all painstakingly restored and accented
with handsome period furnishings.
The dramatic design continues on
every floor, right up to the dazzling roofdeck,
where the landscaped terrace and Art Deco architectural
details create one of the most enviable environments
in town. Historic Landmarks for Living created
a masterpiece with the rehabilitation of The Metropolitan
in 1982. And the building is just as beautiful,
and as well-maintained, as the day it was opened
as a Landmark community. The glamour, sophistication
and luxury of the past live on and have been complemented
with the innovation, conveniences and services
of today.
