Originally named Milltown, Downingtown was once the center of Pennsylvania’s thriving paper industry, bringing logs down the Brandywine Creek to be milled. Located on the Lincoln Highway, Downingtown has long been a popular stop between Philadelphia and the towns of western New Jersey, and it remains very convenient to commute to those areas. Like many small post-industrial towns, Downingtown has revitalized its downtown recently, making it more attractive to businesses and stores. Some of the biggest local names are the Victory Brewing Company and the First National Bank of Chester County. A weekly farmer’s market draws producers from all over the Chester County area.
